Overhead Skid Conveyor

The Overhead Skid Conveyor System is a heavy-duty, high-precision material handling system used primarily in the automotive industry. In this system, vehicle bodies or large components are placed on standardized skids, which are then transported through the production line using powered overhead conveyors, typically via power & free, chain-driven, or friction drive mechanisms.

Unlike floor-based skid conveyors, the overhead skid version lifts the entire structure, allowing for floor-level workspace utilization, easier cleaning, and clear access for automation or robots.

Working Principle

  • Vehicle bodies or assemblies are loaded onto a skid frame.
  • The skid is connected to the overhead conveyor carrier (either directly or via a lift/lower transfer).
  • The conveyor transports the skid through welding, painting, or assembly stations.
  • At each station, the system can stop, index, or buffer the skid for precision operations.
  • The skids can move in loops, inclines, or switch zones as needed.
